Travel
Does my Italian car insurance cover me abroad?
Compulsory liability cover extends under rules that depend on destination; check territorial limits and optional cover with your insurer.
Italian compulsory motor liability cover is recognised for temporary travel within the EU, but coverage and proof rules outside that area depend on the destination. A Green Card may be needed for some countries. Check the policy's territorial scope, exclusions, driver and vehicle conditions, and the certificate's country codes with your insurer before departure.
Compulsory liability and optional cover are different
IVASS explains that compulsory motor third-party liability insurance is valid in EU countries for temporary travel. This cover addresses damage caused to third parties; it does not automatically include damage to your own car, roadside assistance, theft or every contractual option. Read the policy and ask the insurer which cover remains in force for the exact trip and driver.
Outside the EU, the proof and liability arrangements depend on the country and the vehicle's registration. ACI identifies the Green Card as an international certificate and advises checking the countries covered. Codes crossed out on the certificate are excluded. If a destination is not covered, ask the insurer about an extension or local border insurance before entering the country.
Verify the route, dates and evidence
Check each destination and transit country, the Green Card's validity dates, the registration number, authorised drivers and any restriction on vehicle use. Confirm whether the country accepts an electronic certificate or requires a paper original, and keep the insurer's emergency contact details. A rental or borrowed car can have different insurance terms and require written permission for a cross-border trip.
Do not treat a driving licence or international permit as proof of insurance: each document serves a different purpose. Recheck the policy before departure if the route or driver changes. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers Italian road-theory study and category quizzes.
