Charging will not start: what to check at a charging point

If charging will not start, check the connector, authentication and error messages. Do not force the cable or socket; contact the operator.

A charging session may fail to start because of authorisation, compatibility, the cable or a fault at the charging point. Follow the safe checks set out by the operator and in the handbook.

Basic checks before trying again

Check the display to see whether the charging point asks you to authenticate with an app or card, or says that it is out of service. Make sure the car is parked in the correct bay and that the connector is compatible and inserted as instructed. Some vehicles require you to unlock a setting or change an in-car setting before they will accept the cable: consult the handbook.

Do not pull, twist or force the cable. If the car or charging point indicates that it is locked, stop trying and follow the manufacturer’s unlocking procedure. Check that you have not started a billable session despite no power being delivered: the operator’s app may show the session status and any charges.

Restart the process carefully

If no error appears and the cable comes out normally, end the session in the app, unplug and try once more, following that station’s specific sequence. Do not reset or operate electrical panels. If the station tells you to wait or says that technical work is needed, follow that message.

Try another point only if one is available and accessible, bearing in mind that the connector, network and authentication method may differ. If charging still will not start, use an alternative and contact the operator with the charging-point ID, time, vehicle and error code. Do not post payment details or personal information in a public report.

When to stop completely

If the cable, socket or connector is damaged, or you notice unusual heat, a smell or sparks, stop and move away in line with the safety instructions. Notify the operator and, if there is immediate danger, the emergency services. Do not attempt repairs or alternative connections.

Check these in order: the connector is fully engaged, the session is authorised, the socket is compatible and the display messages. Try ending and restarting the session once; if the charging point reports a fault or the cable remains locked, contact the operator’s support service. Do not pull the connector or force the car’s charging flap.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you revise theory by chapter, take timed test quizzes and review mistakes; contact the operator if a charging point is faulty.
