Can a microcar use an Italian motorway?
An AM light quadricycle cannot use a motorway: its technical limits and Article 175 exclude it from access.
No. A microcar approved as a light quadricycle cannot use a motorway. An AM licence covers light vehicles with a design speed of up to 45 km/h; still check the vehicle category shown in its registration documents.
Microcars and the AM category
“Microcar” is a commercial name, so the decisive information is the vehicle’s approval category. The most common microcars are light quadricycles that can be ridden with an AM licence. The Italian transport ministry lists a design speed of up to 45 km/h for this category, along with specific mass and power limits that vary by configuration and engine type.
Article 175 excludes vehicle categories from motorways, including mopeds and vehicles that do not meet the technical requirements for access. An AM light quadricycle does not become eligible because it has an enclosed cabin, four wheels, or is marketed as a “small car”.
Do not confuse AM and B1
Some heavier quadricycles belong to a different approved category and may require a B1 licence. Their similar appearance is not enough to identify the class: check the registration document and approval data. This tells you which licence is needed, but it does not automatically mean the vehicle may use a motorway.
The licence answers who may drive the vehicle; Article 175 separately determines which vehicles may access a particular road. Both checks must be satisfied.
Choose your route before travelling
Do not enter a motorway in an AM microcar. Plan a route that is compatible with the vehicle category and pay attention to access signs, especially when your journey includes ring roads or interchanges with different classifications.
If a vehicle is advertised as a microcar but its documents show a different category, do not infer from that alone that it is allowed. Check the technical requirements and any restrictions for the road section. The vehicle’s approved category and current road rules are what matter.

Frequently asked questions
Can an AM microcar use any part of a motorway?
No. An AM light quadricycle is excluded from motorway access. Choose another route permitted for that vehicle.
Is a B1 microcar always allowed?
A B1 licence does not decide road access by itself. Check the vehicle category, Article 175 requirements, and signs for the section.
