Can a 10 kW electric motorcycle use a motorway?

An approved 10 kW electric motorcycle exceeds the 6 kW exception threshold in Article 175. It may enter only if ridden by an adult and the section has no specific restriction; check the vehicle category as well.

The power threshold for electric motorcycles

For electric motorcycles, Article 175 sets a general threshold of 11 kW. Law 177/2024 added an exception for electric motorcycles rated at 6 kW or more, but only when they are ridden by someone who is at least 18. A 10 kW motorcycle therefore meets the exception threshold, not the general one.

Use the approved power figure shown in the vehicle’s technical documents. Do not confuse rated power with an advertised peak figure or battery energy: the law sets a motor-power threshold. Engine capacity does not apply to an electric vehicle.

The rider must be an adult

A minor cannot rely on this exception, even if their licence allows them to ride that motorcycle on other roads. Road access is separate from the right to ride: checking the licence alone is not enough.

Article 175 covers motorways and main extra-urban roads. For a ring road, establish the section’s category from its signs and official classification; the local name does not prove that the exception applies.

Before setting off

Check the power rating in the documents, confirm that the vehicle is classified as a motorcycle, verify the rider’s age, and follow any orders or restrictions shown on the route. A section can have special restrictions even when the vehicle clears the national threshold.

For current rules, consult the current text of Article 175 and the law published in the Official Gazette. Older pages may list only the general 11 kW threshold and omit the exception that took effect in December 2024.
