I missed my motorway exit: may I reverse?
No. Continue to the next exit; reversing, turning around, or crossing the central barrier is prohibited.
No. Do not reverse, turn around, or cross the central barrier after missing an Italian motorway exit. Article 176 prohibits these manoeuvres on carriageways, ramps, and interchanges. Continue in the same direction and leave at the next exit.
The ban also applies on ramps
Article 176 prohibits reversing on motorway carriageways, ramps, and interchanges, including the emergency lane. The rule applies even if you have just passed the exit, are close to a toll booth, or cannot see another vehicle. A short manoeuvre can surprise traffic approaching at high speed and cause a serious collision.
The Code also prohibits turning around, crossing the central barrier, or travelling against the direction of traffic. Do not stop in the wrong place to ask for help, and do not walk along the road to reach the exit. Keep moving predictably and follow the route ahead.
The correct choice after a missed exit
Continue in your direction and take the next exit. From there, recalculate the route or turn back using the normal road network. The detour may take longer, but it keeps you and other road users within the rules.
If you missed the deceleration lane, do not cut across traffic at the last moment and do not use the emergency lane to recover the exit. Continue even if your navigation app suggests an impossible manoeuvre; road signs and the Highway Code take priority over the suggested route.
If there is a real emergency
If a breakdown or medical problem forces you to stop, reach an emergency bay or lane as soon as you can do so safely and activate the required warnings. An emergency stop is different from trying to correct a route mistake; it does not authorise reversing.
Call roadside assistance or emergency services using the available facilities and remain in a protected position. If the vehicle cannot be moved, warn traffic as required and follow the instructions of the operators who respond.
