Which motorway lanes may you use with a trailer in Italy?

A trailer does not automatically bar you from a lane; check vehicle length, mass, lane signs, and the rules for the section.

A trailer does not by itself determine which motorway lanes you may use. On Italian motorways with at least three lanes in each direction, Article 176 restricts certain goods vehicles over 5 tonnes and vehicle combinations longer than 7 metres to the two lanes nearest the right edge, unless signs say otherwise. Check the combination’s total length and any posted restriction.

The restriction depends on the vehicle combination

Article 176 does not impose one identical lane rule on every vehicle towing a trailer. On motorways with three or more lanes in each direction, it limits goods vehicles with a fully loaded mass above 5 tonnes and vehicles or combinations whose total length exceeds 7 metres to the two lanes nearest the right edge, unless signs provide otherwise.

A car and short trailer may fall outside that particular length rule, while a long combination can meet it. Use the total vehicle-combination length and the masses in the registration documents; do not guess from the fact that a trailer is attached. A specific sign can impose an additional restriction on the section.

Keep to the right and follow lane signs

Article 143 generally requires drivers on a multi-lane carriageway to use the clearest lane on the right, unless signs say otherwise. The lanes to the left are used for overtaking, subject to the usual visibility and safety rules. A special restriction for long combinations narrows which lanes those vehicles may use; it does not make the other lane-use rules disappear.

Before travelling, check the vehicle documents and observe signs at motorway entrances and overhead gantries. Temporary controls, roadworks, and a ban for a specific class can change which lanes are available. Signal lane changes early and leave enough room for the trailer to follow without cutting into another vehicle’s path.

Do not infer the limit from the licence

The licence category answers whether you may drive a particular combination, while lane restrictions depend on vehicle class, mass, length, and signs. The maximum speed for a vehicle with a trailer can also differ from the ordinary car limit. Verify the combination’s permitted mass and the speed rules separately before setting off.

If you cannot establish whether the combination exceeds 7 metres, check the technical documents or measure it safely before the trip. On the motorway, follow the rightmost usable lane and any posted instruction rather than relying on a general assumption about trailers.

Frequently asked questions

Are all cars towing a trailer limited to the right two lanes?

No. The restriction in Article 176 applies on motorways with at least three lanes to specified goods vehicles and combinations longer than 7 metres, unless signs say otherwise.

Does a B or BE licence decide which lane I may use?

The licence determines whether you may drive the combination. The lane rule depends on the combination’s classification, mass, total length, and the signs for the road.
