Can a tractor use a motorway in Italy?

No. Article 175 prohibits agricultural machinery on motorways and main extra-urban roads.

No. Agricultural machinery cannot travel on motorways or main extra-urban roads. To reach another field or town, use a compatible road network and follow the rules for the vehicle’s approval, limits, and route signs.

The ban also covers tractors

Article 175 of the Highway Code includes agricultural machinery among the vehicles excluded from motorways and main extra-urban roads. The ban does not depend on a particular tractor’s top speed, whether it is carrying a load, or the purpose of the trip. You cannot use a ramp or a short section simply to save time.

Agricultural machinery is a vehicle class intended for farming or forestry work, with its own circulation and approval rules. A tractor that may travel on an ordinary road is not automatically allowed onto a road reserved for certain vehicle categories.

Choose a permitted connection

Plan the transfer along roads where the vehicle may travel and check for restrictions based on dimensions, mass, speed, or vehicle type. Read the road-category signs; the local name “ring road” or a divided carriageway does not identify the legal category by itself.

If the route suggested by your navigation app includes a motorway entrance or a main extra-urban road, change it before setting off. Special transfers, such as an oversized or non-compliant vehicle, may require a permit in advance. Do not assume that the agricultural purpose of a journey creates an exemption.

Check the vehicle’s legal class

The category recorded in the vehicle documents matters: agricultural machinery and road-operating machinery are not interchangeable classes. Article 175 contains limited exceptions for specific vehicles and conditions; do not extend them to every tractor or agricultural machine.

If in doubt, compare the registration document with the current rule and instructions from the road owner. The practical choice is to avoid motorways and main extra-urban roads and find a legal route suited to the vehicle’s size and speed.
