Jump-starting a car with jump leads: when is it safe?

Use jump leads only if the handbook and both vehicles allow it, and follow the specified sequence. Call for assistance if the battery is damaged.

An incorrect connection can damage electronics or cause sparks. Check compatibility, connection points and the vehicle-specific instructions before doing anything.

Check that jump-starting is permitted

Before connecting any leads, consult the handbooks for both vehicles. Some cars, especially hybrids, electric vehicles or those with battery-management systems, require specific connection points and procedures. Do not assume that the visible battery is the one to use or that any two vehicles are compatible. If you cannot find clear instructions, call for assistance.

Do not attempt a jump-start if the battery is swollen, leaking, frozen or damaged, if you notice an unusual smell, or if the leads are worn. Switch off both vehicles and keep them stable, with their bodywork apart. Remove jewellery and metal objects from the work area, and keep the leads away from fans and moving parts, following the manufacturer’s precautions.

Connect the leads only in the handbook’s sequence

Identify the terminals and any designated earth points with certainty. Connect the clamps in the order specified by the manufacturer and make sure they cannot touch each other or moving parts. Do not rely on generic instructions if the model’s handbook gives a different sequence. Never reverse the polarity or improvise a direct connection to electronic components.

If the engine does not start after the specified attempt, stop. Do not operate the starter for a long time or rev the engine beyond what the instructions allow. If you notice unusual sparks, heat, smoke or a smell, move away and stop safely. Do not disconnect the clamps haphazardly while the system is active.

After the engine starts

Remove the leads in the stated sequence and check the dashboard for warnings. A successful start does not prove that the battery is healthy; have the charging system and battery checked if the problem recurs. Do not drive if warning lights or unusual behaviour remain, particularly if they involve steering, brakes or safety systems.

Before using jump leads, check that both vehicles are compatible and that the handbook identifies the connection points. Do not connect the terminals at random: some modern cars have dedicated terminals and different procedures. If the battery is swollen, leaking or damaged, do not handle it; call for assistance.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, timed test quizzes and error review; when using jump leads, follow the vehicle handbook only.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use jump leads on a hybrid car?

Only if the model’s handbook allows the procedure and identifies the correct connection points; otherwise call for assistance.

What should I do if the battery is leaking or swollen?

Do not connect leads or handle it. Move away and request qualified assistance.
