Refuelling
How to tell whether a fuel pump dispenses petrol or diesel
Always read the label and code on the pump and compare them with the fuel specified for your vehicle: the nozzle colour is not enough.
To choose between petrol and diesel, read the wording and code on the pump and compare them with the vehicle handbook or label. Do not rely only on the nozzle colour or the fuel used previously: visual codes can differ between filling stations.
Find the fuel specification on the car
The information may be on the fuel flap, beside the filler or in the handbook. A petrol car will show the specification required by the manufacturer; a diesel car will specify diesel. Hybrids, LPG, methane and alternative-fuel vehicles have their own instructions.
If the car is hired, a company vehicle or newly purchased, check before refuelling. Do not guess from an unlabelled cap or use a “similar” fuel because the nozzle appears to fit. If the vehicle label and handbook do not match, contact the dealer or assistance service.
Check every detail on the pump
Check the full fuel name and specification on the pump. Petrol and diesel may be next to each other or have similar prices and pump numbers. Identify the pump number, select the correct product at the terminal and check the screen again before authorising payment.
Do not rely on the nozzle colour: it is not a universal code across brands and countries. If the label is damaged, covered or unclear, do not proceed; ask the operator which fuel it dispenses. For gas refuelling or specific self-service installations, also follow the access requirements and on-site instructions.
If you realise you have made a mistake
If you have put in the wrong fuel but have not started the engine, do not switch on the ignition or try to move the car under engine power. Tell the operator immediately and call assistance so they can assess recovery and draining the tank.
If you have started the vehicle, stop as soon as you can in a safe place, switch off the engine and do not restart it. Tell assistance which fuel you put in, the approximate amount and whether the car was started. Do not add an additive or more fuel to correct the mistake without technical advice.

Frequently asked questions
Does the nozzle colour always identify the fuel?
No. Read the wording and code on the pump and compare them with the vehicle instructions. Colours and layout can vary between filling stations.
What should I do if I have selected the wrong pump?
If you have not started dispensing fuel, cancel the transaction and ask for help. If you have put the wrong fuel in the car, do not start the engine; call the staff and roadside assistance.
