Which petrol should you use? How to read your car handbook
Use the petrol specified for your engine in the handbook and on the fuel flap; do not rely on the product name alone.
Fuel compatibility depends on the vehicle version and the manufacturer’s specifications. Check the handbook before choosing a pump or additive.
Find the manufacturer’s specification
Open the fuel section of the handbook or check the label inside the fuel flap. Look for the required petrol type and any minimum octane rating. Product names can differ between filling stations; compare the specifications and do not choose based on advertising or nozzle colour. If your car is a special or imported version, use the handbook for the correct model and year.
Do not confuse recommended fuel with an additive. A product that claims to clean or improve performance does not replace the manufacturer’s specification. If the handbook permits more than one type, follow the conditions it gives for use. If you cannot find the information, contact the dealer or the manufacturer’s official service and give the model, year and engine type.
Avoid putting in the wrong fuel
Before picking up the nozzle, check the pump label and the wording on the vehicle. If you realise you selected the wrong product but have not started dispensing, return the nozzle to its holder and check again. If the wrong fuel has entered the tank, do not start the engine: call for assistance and explain the amount and type of fuel. Starting or driving may make the problem worse.
Do not try to drain the tank yourself or siphon fuel through a hose. This requires suitable equipment and precautions against fire and vapour. Keep the receipt and note the time to help the recovery service.
Price and service option
Once you have identified the correct fuel, check the price and attended/self-service option on the sign and display. “Premium” product names do not mean they are universally compatible. If you are unsure about a petrol with different properties, compare it with the handbook or ask the manufacturer.
Open the fuel flap: its label often gives the required type, such as unleaded petrol and the minimum octane rating. Confirm this in the handbook and from the marking on the cap; do not choose based on nozzle colour. If the car accepts more than one octane rating, follow the manufacturer’s recommendation for normal use.
