Change of residence: do you need to update your driving licence?

Your change of residence is registered by the local authority; a new driving licence is no longer automatically issued just to change the address.

When you change your residence, notify the Comune through the relevant registry procedure. The address is no longer updated on the driving licence with a new sticker: it is recorded in the relevant databases, so you do not need to request a replacement solely to change your address.

Update your registered residence first

You submit a change-of-residence notification to the Comune under the registry procedure, often through available digital services. Follow the instructions from your new Comune and provide the required details for each household member. The driving-licence procedure is not how you transfer your residence.

The Portale dell’Automobilista has a specific entry for change of residence and explains that the address is updated in the records, without reprinting the driving licence. As a rule, you therefore do not need to replace the card just because its printed address is no longer current. Keep the licence and check that its categories and validity are correct.

When to contact the Motorizzazione or Comune

If you receive correspondence at your old address after registering the change, or the details are incorrect, contact the Comune about the residence registration and the Motorizzazione about the driving-licence records. Have the notification reference and an identity document ready; do not send personal information to unofficial contacts.

A change of residence may affect other procedures, such as delivery of a replacement licence or renewal. If you have an application in progress, update the address with the office or service handling it, even though the licence itself is not reprinted. Confirmation from the registry does not guarantee that every authority will update its correspondence immediately.

Distinguish the address from licence validity

Changing your address does not renew the licence, extend its expiry date or change the categories you may drive. Keep checking the date printed on the document. If your name or another identifying detail also changes, ask the Motorizzazione which correction or replacement procedure applies: that is different from a simple move.

If you move to Italy with a driving licence issued abroad, the situation is different: the issuing country, residence and conversion agreements all matter. Do not apply the Italian residence-update instructions to a foreign licence; consult the MIT service on licence conversion and validity.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you study the rules by chapter and take test quizzes with error review, even while moving home.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to request a replacement licence after changing residence?

Usually not: changing your address does not mean the licence is reprinted. Notify the Comune and update any separate applications or contact details that are in progress.

What should I do if my licence is sent to my old address?

Contact the authority or postal service handling delivery and check that the address on the application was updated. For your registered residence, contact the Comune.
