Can a newly licensed driver use a category B motorhome?
Yes only if the motorhome fits B and the driver meets the applicable novice power limits and conditions.
A newly licensed driver may drive an Italian category B motorhome only if it fits category B and meets the power limits applicable during the first three years: specific power no higher than 75 kW per tonne and, for M1 vehicles, maximum power of 105 kW. Check the motorhome's category and power in its documents; the Italian Driver Portal also offers a number-plate check.
Check the vehicle category and power separately
Category B covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass up to 3,500 kg and no more than eight passengers besides the driver. During the first three years after issue, for licences subject to rules in force from 14 December 2024, the driver may not use a vehicle with specific power, relative to tare, above 75 kW/t. For M1 vehicles, including electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, there is also a maximum power limit of 105 kW.
Both limits matter: being under 3,500 kg does not make a motorhome eligible if its power exceeds the novice-driver limits. For example, a motorhome within category B may still be prohibited for a driver in the first three years. Check whether the vehicle is classed as M1 and use its recorded power and tare, not the commercial model name.
Use the official check with care
The Italian Driver Portal lets users enter a number plate to check whether a newly licensed driver may drive a specific vehicle. The Ministry warns that the result may be inaccurate for plug-in hybrids and recommends checking the vehicle document as well. For licences issued before 14 December 2024, transitional rules may apply; check the case using the issue date.
The Highway Code also provides exceptions, including when a qualified accompanying instructor is seated beside the driver. Do not assume an exception applies by analogy: verify every statutory condition first. Novice-driver speed limits are a separate obligation from the power limits.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review novice-driver theory and quizzes; check a specific motorhome’s eligibility using its number plate and official registration data.
Frequently asked questions
Do the 75 kW/t and 105 kW limits apply for three years?
For licences subject to the rules effective from 14 December 2024, they apply during the first three years after issue. Check transitional rules for earlier licences.
If the motorhome is below 3,500 kg, can I drive it automatically?
Not necessarily. Check specific power and, if it is an M1 vehicle, the 105 kW maximum as well.
