Motorhome over 7,500 kg: which licence is required?

A motorhome authorised above 7,500 kg calls for category C, unless its seating or approval requires another category.

If an Italian motorhome has a maximum authorised mass above 7,500 kg, category C is the category to consider; C1 stops at and includes 7,500 kg. The authorised maximum in the vehicle document matters, not kerb weight or the load on a particular trip. Also check passenger capacity, vehicle classification and any trailer, since these can change the category.

C1 and C cover different mass ranges

Category C1 covers motor vehicles other than D1 or D vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg, designed to carry no more than eight passengers in addition to the driver. Category C covers heavier vehicles beyond C1, subject to the category's seating and construction requirements. A motorhome authorised at 7,600 kg is therefore outside C1, even if it weighs much less without luggage.

Read the maximum authorised mass on the registration certificate or Documento Unico and confirm the vehicle's category. If the vehicle is designed to carry more than eight passengers besides the driver, D categories apply rather than the ordinary motorhome rule. The document's specifications and vehicle use matter.

The licence does not remove loading duties

After identifying the category, still respect the motorhome's maximum authorised mass, axle limits and any trailer limits. Category C does not make the motorhome more capacious or change its approval. A combination with a trailer may require another category based on the authorised masses of both the towing vehicle and trailer.

If the document is close to a threshold or the vehicle category is unclear, ask the Motorizzazione or a technical professional who can check the approval record. Do not rely on the model's commercial name or kerb weight. If the motorhome has been modified, confirm that the change was approved and recorded before driving.

Frequently asked questions

Does a motorhome authorised at exactly 7,500 kg require C?

C1 covers an authorised maximum mass up to and including 7,500 kg, if its other requirements are met. Above that, consider C.

Can I use today’s scale weight to choose between C1 and C?

No. The licence category depends on the maximum authorised mass in the document, not this trip's actual weight.
