How can you tell where an Italian no-overtaking restriction ends?

The restriction ends at its cancellation sign or under the conditions set by the regulation; general overtaking rules remain.

A no-overtaking restriction ends at the sign that cancels it or when the regulation’s stated condition is met. That does not automatically make a pass safe or legal: visibility, road markings, and the Highway Code’s general prohibitions still apply.

Look for the cancellation sign

A no-overtaking sign imposes a restriction for the road section specified by the rules and signs. The end may be marked by the corresponding cancellation sign or by another condition established in the regulation. Read any distance or supplementary panel and keep following the prohibition until its end is clear.

Do not assume the restriction is over merely because the road looks wider or the surface marking changes. The sign and any later traffic controls define the applicable instruction. If you are unsure, continue without overtaking until the restriction’s end is unambiguous.

The end of the sign does not remove general rules

Once the specific sign no longer applies, Article 148 still governs overtaking. The driver must check visibility, available distance, traffic ahead and behind, and whether the manoeuvre can be completed without danger or obstruction. Passing near a bend, crest, intersection, or another prohibited location can still be unlawful.

Road markings matter too. A continuous centre line or other marking can prohibit crossing even after a particular sign ends. An authorised officer’s directions and temporary signs also take priority. You need both a permitted location and enough space to pass safely.

Wait if conditions are not clear

A vehicle ahead travelling slowly does not create a right to overtake. Keep a safe following distance, wait for a legal opportunity, and do not accelerate to squeeze through a short gap. The driver being passed must not speed up to obstruct the manoeuvre.

When the restriction ends, reassess the road rather than immediately passing. Check that you can return to your lane before approaching traffic, and abandon the attempt if visibility or distance is insufficient.

Frequently asked questions

Can I overtake as soon as I pass the cancellation sign?

Only if the manoeuvre also meets the general rules on visibility, distance, markings, traffic, and prohibited locations.

Does the end of a no-overtaking sign cancel a continuous line?

No. Road markings and other signs have their own effect. Do not cross a continuous line unless the rules and the situation permit it.
