How to keep track of your car tax, insurance and MOT

Keep separate reminders for each deadline and check every detail with the relevant official authority or service.

Car tax, insurance cover and the roadworthiness test are separate obligations. One calendar can help you remember them, but check the official sources and current documents.

Create a calendar for your vehicle

For each car, note the registration number, dates and document references. Set reminders well in advance for car tax, insurance renewal and the roadworthiness test, keeping a separate entry for each requirement. Dates can change after a move, a change of ownership or a particular administrative circumstance, so do not automatically copy last year’s dates.

For car tax, check the deadline and payment arrangements with your Region’s tax service or the official channel it specifies. For insurance, check the policy, start date and cover with the insurer. For the roadworthiness test, consult the vehicle documents and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) or Portale dell’Automobilista services. A personal reminder is a prompt, not proof that an obligation has been met.

Keep receipts and confirmations

Save payment receipts, proof of insurance, test reports and correspondence from authorities in a folder organised by vehicle. After each requirement is met, update the calendar and check that the document shows the correct registration number and period. If you use an ACI service or an app, check what data it receives and how often it is updated; consult the primary source if a date does not match.

For a shared car, agree who checks the deadlines and how changes of address or registered keeper are reported. Do not share vehicle details in public groups or send documents containing personal data through unofficial channels.

If you find conflicting information

Contact the relevant authority or insurer and ask for confirmation you can keep on record. Do not drive based on an old screen, an unlinked receipt or a vague message. If a deadline is close, act in good time and keep the reply.

For each vehicle, record three separate dates: roadworthiness test, third-party liability (RCA) insurance and car tax. Check the test through Portale dell’Automobilista, RCA cover through the dedicated insurance-check service, and car tax through ACI or the relevant regional service. Set reminders a few weeks ahead and keep the receipts.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory study by chapter, timed quizzes and error review; for deadlines and payments, consult the authorities and official documents.

Frequently asked questions

Does ACI automatically update all deadlines?

Available services depend on the channel and the data consulted; always check the document or contact the relevant authority.

Can I use just one annual reminder?

It is better to record each obligation separately: they have different dates, responsible parties and proof of compliance.
