Licence renewal, replacement and reclassification: what is the difference?

These are three different procedures. Renewal confirms validity after a medical assessment; a replacement takes the place of a lost, stolen or damaged card; reclassification assigns a new category, usually through a replacement showing the updated entitlement. The correct request depends on what has changed.

Renewal changes the validity period

The Italian Portale dell’Automobilista describes renewal as a visit to check that the driver still meets the requirements for driving. Expiry intervals depend on category and age, while individual conditions can require different checks. If your licence is nearing expiry, arrange the assessment through an authorised channel and check the date on the document: booking an appointment does not renew it.

Renewal concerns how long the licence remains valid. It is not a new category and it is not a replacement for a lost card. The Portale provides ways to check the status of a procedure. When a new card arrives, compare its dates and codes with the outcome of the assessment.

Replacement and reclassification

A replacement substitutes the document if it is lost, stolen, destroyed or damaged. Depending on the case, the police authority receiving a report may handle the procedure or you may need to apply to the Motorizzazione. Do not confuse replacement with renewal: if the licence is also close to expiry, both needs may overlap and the correct procedure must be checked.

Reclassification assigns a different category, for example when requirements or conditions support a different entitlement. The Portale describes it as issuing a replacement with the new category, without exams when the requirements are met; it can be requested by the holder or ordered by the Local Medical Commission. For example, ask for a replacement if the card was lost; requesting an identical copy does not change its category.
