Lost or stolen driving licence: how to get a replacement
After losing your licence or having it stolen, report it and check whether the simplified replacement procedure applies. The process differs if it cannot be replaced online.
If your driving licence is lost or stolen, report it to the police and ask them to check whether it can be replaced through the simplified procedure. The authorities may issue a temporary driving permit where applicable; if the licence is not eligible, follow the Motorisation Office’s instructions.
Report it and ask for an eligibility check
Contact the police and report the loss or theft. Bring an identity document and follow the instructions of the station or office. Portale dell’Automobilista describes a check by the authority receiving the report to see whether the licence can be replaced. If the Central Operations Office (UCO) can issue a replacement, the process may start directly there.
Do not confuse reporting the loss with applying for a replacement: in some cases the request is submitted online, while in others you must contact the Civil Motorisation Office. Ask what outcome has been recorded and keep a copy or reference number for the report. If the theft happened abroad, ask the local authorities how to document it and check with the Portal whether you need to repeat or supplement the report in Italy.
When you can drive
If the procedure allows it, the police issue a temporary driving permit. That permit, not the report itself, authorises you to drive while you wait; check its validity, territorial scope and instructions. If you were not given a permit, ask which document authorises you to drive before getting behind the wheel.
Once a temporary permit is issued, the previous licence may no longer be valid. If you find it later, do not use it unless the authorities tell you to. Keep the permit with you and follow its conditions. The licence’s category, restrictions and expiry date still matter while you wait for the replacement.
Track delivery of the new document
If your licence qualifies for the simplified procedure, the Motorisation Office sends the replacement to the address given in the report or application. Check that the address and contact details are correct, and ask the office what to do if delivery fails. The Portal says the postal service may require payment for delivery or collection.
If you must apply through the UMC, consult its service page and prepare the current form, documents and fees. Do not send full photos of your licence or identity document to unverified contacts. When the new card arrives, check its details and securely destroy any copies you no longer need.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale is useful for revising theory through chapters, exam-style quizzes and error review while you wait for the document.
Frequently asked questions
Does reporting the loss mean I can drive straight away?
Not automatically. Ask the police whether the licence is eligible for replacement and whether a temporary permit will be issued in your case. Keep that permit with you and follow its conditions.
What if my licence is not eligible for the simplified replacement procedure?
You will need to apply under the instructions from the Civil Motorisation Office. Portale dell’Automobilista provides the procedure and forms; check the current version before paying or sending documents.
