Italian category A practical test: preparing for the slalom
The slalom belongs to the motorcycle practical test; technique and layout depend on the category and Ministry instructions.
In the Italian category A practical test, the slalom is part of the motorcycle-control exercises on a dedicated area. Its layout and procedure depend on the Ministry instructions for the category. Prepare in supervised lessons on the test motorcycle; theory quizzes cannot teach the manoeuvre.
What the exercise checks
The motorcycle practical test includes a vehicle-control phase and a road-traffic phase. Ministry instructions describe the exercises and equipment for the relevant categories; do not take distances or speeds from a video or another candidate's account. Your instructor can tell you which layout applies to the motorcycle and test session you will use.
The slalom lets the examiner observe balance and control while the candidate changes direction between markers. In lessons, the instructor can work on where you look, posture, steady speed and coordination of the controls. Do not stare at the cone directly in front of the wheel: follow your instructor's guidance and look towards the next part of the path while keeping control.
Practise under the right conditions
The exercises take place in a suitable area and on an appropriate motorcycle. Take supervised lessons and ask the school to show the current layout for A1, A2 or A, because the motorcycle and test requirements depend on the category. Wear the helmet and protective equipment required. Skills learned on a different motorcycle may need adjustment.
If a line does not work, stop as your instructor directs and repeat it with a specific correction. Do not practise in a car park open to traffic or place cones on a public road. You can review theory in an app, but balance, controls and motorcycle manoeuvres are learned through supervised practical training.
Use Quiz Patente Ufficiale to review common Italian road rules, signs and right of way with theory quizzes.
Frequently asked questions
How many cones are used in the category A slalom?
Do not treat a number in an old guide as universal. The layout depends on the current instructions for the category and test course; ask your driving school.
Can I practise the slalom alone?
Practise in the designated area, on the appropriate motorcycle and under an instructor's supervision. Do not set up an exercise on a road or car park open to traffic.
