Italian category B practical test: managing anxiety during the test
Use supervised practice and a simple routine to manage test anxiety; quizzes support theory, not practical driving.
To manage anxiety during the Italian category B practical test, prepare the documents and vehicle routine in advance, practise varied routes with an instructor and focus on one safe decision at a time. Quiz practice can refresh theory, but it cannot replace practical lessons or guarantee a pass.
Make test day predictable
The Ministry describes the category B practical test as an assessment by an authorised examiner of the candidate's ability to drive. You cannot control the route or every traffic event, but you can reduce avoidable uncertainty: confirm the appointment and required documents with your school, arrive with time to spare and use the same basic setup routine practised in lessons.
Before moving, adjust the seat and mirrors, fasten the belt and check that you understand the examiner's instruction. If you did not hear it, ask for it to be repeated. Do not rush into a manoeuvre because you are worried about silence or a delay. For example, if traffic leaves no safe gap, wait and reassess instead of treating hesitation as an error.
Focus on the next safe action
During lessons, ask your instructor to practise unfamiliar junctions, roundabouts and ordinary traffic so you can work on observation rather than memorising one route. After a practice drive, discuss one or two concrete decisions that made you anxious and repeat them with guidance. Short breathing pauses before the car moves can help you settle, but they do not replace training.
If a mistake happens, return your attention to the road and continue safely; trying to judge the result while driving can distract you. Review road rules with an app if that helps your preparation, while leaving manoeuvres and driving confidence to the instructor. No study tool can promise that anxiety will disappear or that the test will be passed. MIT instructions set the road-traffic phase at 25 minutes, so prepare to stay focused and in control throughout it.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review Italian theory before the test.
Frequently asked questions
Can quiz practice replace a driving lesson?
No. Quizzes can refresh Italian theory. Vehicle control, manoeuvres and decision-making in traffic need practical lessons with an instructor.
What if I do not understand the examiner's direction?
Ask for it to be repeated. Continue to follow signs and traffic rules, and do not make a sudden move to guess what was meant.
