Category B practical test as a private candidate: who provides the car?
The car must meet MIT requirements and have dual controls; arrange it with the Motor Vehicle Office and provider before test day.
The category B practical test requires a suitable vehicle fitted with dual controls. A private candidate must arrange a compliant car and coordinate with the Motor Vehicle Office in advance; simply having a private car available is not enough. Check its category, technical characteristics, documents and presentation arrangements before booking the test.
The test vehicle must be suitable
The MIT category B page specifies a vehicle in category B, capable of at least 100 km/h and fitted with dual controls for the practical test. The controls let the examiner intervene when needed. An ordinary private car without the required equipment does not qualify simply because it is roadworthy.
If you are a private candidate, contact the Motor Vehicle Office handling your booking and ask how to supply a compliant vehicle. You may be able to arrange one through a driving school or another permitted provider, but agree the service, time and required documents in advance. Local arrangements can vary; do not turn up assuming that a car will be available at the site.
Check the vehicle and certification in advance
Before test day, confirm who is responsible for the car and what evidence must be shown, such as registration and insurance documents or a provider declaration. Make sure the dual controls are installed and working and that the transmission matches the one stated on your learner permit. Taking the test in an automatic car normally leads to code 78 on the licence.
MIT Decree No. 294/2025 sets an eight-hour route and certification for regular category B, but its provisions take effect from the director’s decree on the platform; check which regime and certificate apply to your permit. This requirement is separate from arranging a test vehicle. Check each item: training certificate on one hand, compliant car on the other. If either is missing, resolve it with the Motor Vehicle Office before going to the test.

Frequently asked questions
Can I bring my own private car?
Only if the vehicle and its provision meet the requirements, including dual controls. Agree the arrangement with the Motor Vehicle Office before the test.
Does the Motor Vehicle Office always provide the car?
Do not assume that it does. Ask the office handling the test who must arrange the vehicle and which options are accepted.
