Italian category B road test: preparing for a lane change

For a lane change on the Italian B test, check traffic and mirrors, signal early and move only when safe.

For a lane change on the Italian category B road test, check the position of other traffic, signal in good time and move only when there is room. An indicator communicates your intention; it does not give you priority or make a move safe after another driver has begun it.

Check before moving

The Ministry's instructions include lane changing among the skills that may be observed. Before steering across, check your mirrors and the area you cannot see directly, assess the distance and speed of traffic, and make sure the road markings allow the move. Then signal early enough and keep the indicator on while moving, as required by Article 154.

For example, you are in the right lane and need the left lane for a marked direction. If a vehicle is already close in that lane, do not force your way in just because you signalled. Hold your lane, let it pass and reassess when there is a safe gap. Your indicator does not require other drivers to brake or yield to you.

Keep the move clear and controlled

Once you have confirmed that you can move, steer gradually without a sudden correction or sharp braking. Keep checking the situation as you cross the lane line: traffic may change after your first look. Turn the indicator off when the move is complete and stabilise the car in its new lane.

During the test, make genuine checks rather than exaggerated movements. If markings prohibit the change or traffic leaves no safe gap, wait. Your instructor can practise with you on multi-lane roads and help identify blind spots and useful distances. The examiner assesses judgement and safety, not speed in changing lanes.

Frequently asked questions

Does signalling give me priority to change lanes?

No. It shows what you intend to do. You must still ensure that the move causes no danger or obstruction and respect other traffic.

What if I cannot get into the lane before a turn?

Do not cut across or brake sharply. Follow the markings and the examiner's next safe direction. Practise planning lane changes early with your instructor.
