Italian category B road test: passing a bus or tram stop

Near a bus or tram on the Italian B test, check for pedestrians, tracks and signs before passing or changing lanes.

During the Italian B test, observe passengers, pedestrians and nearby traffic when approaching a bus or tram stop. Follow signs and priority rules, leave safe side clearance and do not overtake a stationary tram where the law prohibits it.

Stops and passengers

Bus and tram stops may be among the road features observed on the practical test. Slow down near a stopped vehicle and allow for people getting off or crossing the road. Check pavements and the space between the vehicle and the stop. If someone is crossing, apply the rules for pedestrians and stop when required.

Trams run on tracks and may have specific priority at junctions; do not assume their position or a stop lets you pass on any side. Article 148 also regulates passing trams: when a tram is stopped in the middle of the road to let passengers board or alight, and there is no refuge, overtaking it on the right is prohibited. Signs and actual road width still matter.

Wait if the passage is unsafe

Do not squeeze past public transport to gain space, and do not enter the opposing lane unless the move is allowed and safe. If a bus signals that it is pulling away, assess the rule that applies to the road and signs: its indicator does not replace your observation or cancel every priority rule. Leave room for passengers and cyclists travelling alongside it.

Practise different situations with your instructor: a bus bay, a tram in the centre, passengers near a crossing and a reserved lane. Your instructor can explain where to look and when to wait. During the test, a short wait is preferable to a move that forces a pedestrian or another vehicle to dodge you.

Frequently asked questions

May I pass a stopped tram on the right?

Not when it is stopped in the middle of the road for passengers and there is no refuge. Article 148 prohibits passing on the right in that case.

Should I watch for people leaving a bus?

Yes. Slow down, check beside the vehicle and stop when a pedestrian crosses or is about to cross in the situations covered by law.
