Italian category B road test: what to do when entering a tunnel

In a tunnel on the Italian B test, follow signs, use required lights and keep a suitable speed and distance.

A tunnel is a special road situation that may appear on the Italian category B test route. Follow signs, use the required lights, maintain a suitable distance and speed, and do not stop or reverse. The specific Italian rules in Article 176 also apply.

Before and during entry

The Ministry's instructions list tunnels among special road features a candidate may encounter. Before entering, read the signs, check signal lights and prepare a speed suited to visibility and traffic. Article 176 regulates driving on motorways and main extra-urban roads, including prohibited conduct in tunnels; check the signs and the rules that apply to the road type.

In a tunnel, use lights as required for your vehicle and follow the signs, keep a distance that lets you react and remain in your lane. Do not look only towards the exit: consider traffic ahead, queues and any special panels. If traffic is slowing, reduce speed early rather than at the last moment. Do not turn around or reverse because you missed an exit.

If something goes wrong

A breakdown or emergency must be handled using the signs, operator instructions and safety procedures for that tunnel. Do not get out or stop in a lane without need; use marked emergency bays and devices if the situation allows. During the test, the candidate should remain cautious and avoid inventing a manoeuvre to escape a problem.

Before the test, ask your instructor to review tunnel signs and rules. Each tunnel may display operating instructions of its own, so an example cannot replace the signs in front of you. After a lesson, note which road and signs you encountered: distinguishing a motorway, a main extra-urban road and another type of route prevents applying a rule in the wrong context.
