Category B practical test: how can you prepare for a U-turn?
A U-turn may be assessed in Italy’s category B practical test; practise with an instructor and never attempt it where prohibited.
Italy’s category B practical test may assess whether you can turn around in a suitable space while following the rules of the road. You must observe the road, check that the manoeuvre is permitted and keep control of the car. Prepare this skill with an instructor in an appropriate area; written directions cannot replace supervised practice.
Check whether the manoeuvre is permitted
A U-turn is not allowed everywhere. Signs, road markings, visibility and rules for that section may prohibit it or make it unsafe. During the test, follow the examiner’s direction and check your surroundings before acting. If conditions do not allow a safe manoeuvre, explain the issue and wait for an appropriate instruction instead of improvising.
Your instructor can show you how to choose a sufficiently clear location and monitor other road users. The space needed depends on the car’s size and road width. Do not copy a generic example on a public road without supervision; prepare a test manoeuvre only within the legal conditions for practice.
Work on observation and control
During lessons, learn to check both directions of traffic, notice pedestrians and stop the manoeuvre if another road user approaches. Keep the car at a very low speed and use the controls according to the vehicle and professional guidance. The goal is to act only when space and visibility make it safe, without obstructing others.
The examiner chooses the route and assesses your overall driving; a U-turn may not be requested in every test. Do not invent an automatic-failure rule from an isolated account. Quiz Patente Ufficiale supports theory study, while U-turns and other manoeuvres require practical lessons with an instructor.

Frequently asked questions
Can I make a U-turn whenever the road looks wide enough?
No. Check signs, road rules, visibility and other road users. Sufficient width alone does not make the manoeuvre legal.
Is a U-turn required in every practical test?
The test route can vary. Prepare the skill with an instructor without assuming a particular manoeuvre will always be requested.
