Italian category B road test: approaching a level crossing

On the Italian B test, approach a level crossing carefully and stop when signals, barriers or traffic require it.

At a level crossing during the Italian B test, watch lights, barriers, signs and traffic beyond the tracks. Stop when a warning is active, and do not enter unless you can cross fully and clear the railway. Never pass a barrier that is moving.

Read the signals before the tracks

The Ministry's practical-test programme lists level crossings among the special situations a candidate may encounter. Approach at a suitable speed and check signs, lights and barrier position early. A flashing red light, a lowering barrier or an audible warning means stop before the stop line. Do not try to gain time by accelerating across.

Article 147 of Italy's Highway Code prohibits entering when barriers are closed or moving, warning lights or sounds are active, or another obstruction exists. Follow the devices even if you cannot see a train. For example, if cars are queued beyond the tracks and there is no room to exit, wait before the crossing. Becoming stuck on the tracks creates a serious hazard.

Cross only when you can clear the tracks

If the barriers are open and no signal prohibits passage, check that traffic allows you to cross without stopping on the tracks. Keep your path and do not make a manoeuvre that could leave you stationary in the middle. Do not overtake a queue to squeeze in ahead of the barriers. After crossing, continue without stopping immediately beyond the tracks if this would prevent others from clearing them.

If a vehicle becomes stranded on the tracks, immediately alert the railway operator using the devices and contact details displayed there, and move people away when possible. For test preparation, ask your instructor to review railway signs and emergency actions; do not practise dangerous scenarios on an open road.

Frequently asked questions

If the barriers are open, may I enter when there is a queue beyond the tracks?

Only if you can cross and fully clear the railway. If the queue could stop you on the tracks, wait before the crossing.

Can I cross as a barrier starts to come down?

No. A moving barrier or active warning requires you to stop. Do not accelerate to beat it.
