Italian category B road test: preparing for a turn

For a turn on the Italian B test, choose the correct position, signal early and respect road users and priority.

A turn on the Italian category B road test must be prepared: read the signs, check nearby traffic, signal early and take the permitted position. Before crossing the junction, yield where required and make sure the exit is clear.

Prepare your path

The Ministry's instructions include turns among the situations assessed in the practical test. Do not begin moving sideways only when you reach the junction. Identify the requested direction in advance, read lane arrows and road markings, then check mirrors and road users around you. Article 154 requires you to ensure the move creates no danger or obstruction and to signal in good time.

For a right turn, the Italian Highway Code says to keep as close as possible to the right edge; for a left turn, move towards the road centre, unless signs say otherwise or the road is one-way. Always follow marked lanes and do not enter the opposing lane. For example, if a painted guide line keeps you in a dedicated lane, do not cut towards a position remembered from a different junction.

Yield and complete the turn

An indicator tells others what you intend to do, but does not give you priority. Check approaching vehicles, people crossing and cyclists; obey the light or sign in place. Turn only when you can do so without making others brake or change direction. If the safe moment has passed, wait for the next one instead of speeding up because the examiner gave a direction.

Ask your instructor to practise turns with traffic lights, several lanes and limited visibility. After each exercise, explain what you checked and which sign controlled the movement. This makes it easier to correct a specific lapse, such as overlooking a pedestrian on the road you are joining.

Frequently asked questions

Does signalling let me turn as soon as the light goes green?

No. It communicates your intention; you still have to respect priority, crossings and traffic and check that the turn is safe.

Where should I position the car for a left turn?

Normally near the centre of the road; on a one-way road, as close as possible to the left edge. Signs and lanes can prescribe a different path.
