What is the speed limit on a main extra-urban road?

The general maximum is 110 km/h, or 90 in precipitation; new drivers are limited to 90 for their first three years.

The general limit on main extra-urban roads is 110 km/h and falls to 90 in precipitation. During the first three years after an A2, A, B1, or B licence, a driver’s personal maximum is 90 km/h, unless signs show a lower limit.

The general limit and rain

Article 142 sets 110 km/h as the general maximum on main extra-urban roads. This is a maximum, not a required speed: permanent or temporary signs may impose a lower limit, and the actual situation may require you to slow down further.

In any kind of precipitation, the maximum on these roads is 90 km/h. You must still adjust speed to the road surface, visibility, and stopping distance. Staying under the number does not remove your duty to keep the vehicle under control.

What changes for a newly licensed driver

For the first three years after obtaining an A2, A, B1, or B licence, Article 117 limits a driver to 90 km/h on main extra-urban roads. That means a newly licensed driver remains at 90 even where the general limit is 110. In rain, the general limit is also 90; if signs show 70, the limit is 70.

This is a speed restriction. It is separate from the vehicle-power limits that can apply to some cars driven with a B licence, and it does not by itself create a general ban on carrying passengers.

Make sure the road is type B

A road called a ring road is not necessarily a main extra-urban road. The category is shown by the start and end signs and the features set out in the Code. If the section is a secondary extra-urban or urban road, its general speed limit may be different, and posted signs still apply.

Check signs at every entrance instead of relying on a route name in your navigation app. The road category, weather, personal limit, and posted signs all contribute to the maximum that applies.
