Everyday motoring
Can you drive while taking a medicine that causes drowsiness?
Do not drive if the medicine affects alertness or reflexes; read the leaflet and ask a clinician or pharmacist without stopping treatment yourself.
It depends on the medicine, its warnings and its effects on you. If the leaflet warns of drowsiness or slower reflexes, or you experience those effects, do not drive until you have discussed the risk with a doctor or pharmacist. Do not stop or change treatment on your own: an online article cannot replace medical advice.
Check the warnings and your symptoms
A medicine can reduce alertness, attention or the ability to react even when prescribed and taken correctly. Read the package leaflet, especially warnings about driving and operating machinery. Consider the effects you notice and any combination with other medicines or alcohol, without deciding on your own that a particular dose is risk-free.
If you are unsure, contact the prescriber or pharmacist and explain when you need to drive, which product you take and what symptoms you notice. Do not stop or alter a necessary treatment without medical advice. If you feel drowsy or the leaflet says to avoid driving, choose another way to travel until you receive guidance suited to your case.
Medication and the drug-driving offence are not identical
Article 187 of the Italian Road Code concerns driving while psychophysically impaired after taking narcotic or psychotropic substances. The presence of a prescribed medicine does not automatically amount to an offence under that article, but an effect that compromises vehicle control can still make driving unsafe and requires caution. Do not use the drug-driving rule to draw medical conclusions about your treatment.
For example, if a new medicine makes you sleepy, do not try to “push through” a trip. If symptoms start while you are already driving, stop somewhere safe and seek health advice before deciding what to do next. The leaflet and a healthcare professional’s advice take precedence over other people’s experiences.

Not necessarily. Follow the warnings and ask whether the medicine or its effects reduce your driving ability.
Should I stop treatment if it causes drowsiness?
Do not change treatment yourself. Ask your doctor or pharmacist how to manage the medicine and driving.
