Winter diesel: what to know in very cold weather

In very low temperatures, use the fuel specified for your vehicle and follow the station’s guidance; do not improvise with additives.

Seasonal diesel properties and vehicle performance depend on conditions and the product specifications. If you have trouble, do not keep trying to start the engine.

Seasonal fuel

In cold periods, filling stations may offer diesel formulated for the season and region. Availability and specifications depend on location and time of year: ask the operator which product is being dispensed and check the displayed information. If your vehicle requires a particular specification, consult its handbook and the manufacturer’s notices.

Do not add petrol or additives to diesel unless the manufacturer explicitly says to. An improvised mixture can damage fuel-system components and affect warranty cover. Use additives only if compatible and in the quantities specified by the product and vehicle manufacturers.

If the engine struggles to start

If the engine will not start in cold weather, follow the handbook procedure for the pre-heating system. Avoid repeated, prolonged attempts with the starter motor: they can drain the battery or overheat components. If warning lights or unusual noises appear, stop and seek help instead of trying improvised fixes near the engine.

If the vehicle is stranded on the road, make it safe without exposing yourself to traffic. If you are in a dangerous place, move away from the carriageway if possible and call for assistance. Do not pour hot water over components or use flames to warm pipes or fuel.

Prepare before setting off

In winter, check that the car is roadworthy, the battery shows no faults and there is enough fuel for your journey. For trips in cold areas, check the forecast and local guidance; choosing the right fuel does not remove the need for suitable tyres and equipment for the road conditions.

Winter diesel is formulated to reduce low-temperature flow problems, but availability and characteristics depend on the location and product. Do not add petrol or improvised additives. If the car struggles to start after severe cold, avoid repeated attempts and seek assistance.

To revise driving rules for difficult conditions, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, timed quizzes and error review; follow the handbook for fuel guidance.
