Tyres
When winter tyres or snow chains are required
Requirements apply on roads covered by an order, usually from 15 November to 15 April. Check the signs and rules for your route.
There is no blanket national requirement for every road: authorities can require winter equipment on specified sections. The usual period is 15 November to 15 April, but check signs, roads and local dates before setting off.
Check the road, not just the calendar
The ministerial directive generally sets the winter period from 15 November to 15 April, but requirements apply to sections designated by the road operator or owner through an order and road signs. Mountain roads or special climate conditions may have different dates.
Before travelling, check the motorway operator’s, road authority’s or council’s website and follow the signs along your route. A journey through several provinces may cross areas with different rules. Do not assume the requirement begins everywhere on 15 November or ends automatically on 15 April without checking the local order.
Choose compatible equipment
Where an order requires it, the rule usually allows suitable winter tyres or compatible anti-skid devices carried in the vehicle. If you keep summer tyres on, check which chain or snow-sock size fits and whether they can be fitted to your vehicle. The handbook may set restrictions or specify which wheels they can be used on.
All-season tyres count only if they meet the markings and requirements that apply to the vehicle and the local order. Do not rely on the marketing name “all season”: read the markings on the sidewall and ask a tyre specialist. Check current MIT circulars for speed ratings and permitted fitting periods.
Prepare for a safe journey
If you carry chains, practise fitting them before an emergency, following the car and device handbooks. Try on level ground away from traffic, with gloves and a torch to hand. Do not fit them on the exposed edge of a fast road if you can reach a safe lay-by.
Having the required equipment does not mean it is safe to continue in snow or ice. Slow down, leave more distance and cancel the trip if conditions exceed your ability or the equipment available. Check tyre pressure and tread too: winter equipment does not make worn or damaged tyres safe.
