Novice drivers and plug-in hybrids: how to check the limits
The online plate check may be inaccurate for some plug-in hybrids: compare it with the registration document and your licence date.
The Automobile Portal warns that its plate check may be inaccurate for some plug-in hybrids. Category B licences issued from 14 December 2024 are subject to 75 kW/t and, for M1 vehicles, a 105 kW maximum for three years. Check the vehicle’s type-approved registration data as well as the online result; do not rely on the figure in an advertisement.
Why the automated result may need a second check
Plug-in cars combine a combustion engine with one or more electric motors. A brochure may list system output, peak power or a commercial figure. The legal novice-driver check instead depends on the type-approved data registered for that specific vehicle. The Automobile Portal expressly warns that its plate result may not be accurate for some plug-in hybrids.
First enter the registration plate in the Ministry service and note the answer. Then compare the vehicle document with the rules that apply to your licence date. Since 14 December 2024, category B restrictions last three years and combine 75 kW/t with a 105 kW maximum for M1. Earlier licences had a one-year regime: a 65 kW/t specific-power limit including battery mass for electric or plug-in cars, plus the 70 kW M1 cap. Do not transfer limits from one period to another.
How to resolve a mismatch
Check that you entered the plate correctly and that the document belongs to the exact car you plan to drive. Locate the vehicle category, power and tare mass in its registration data; do not choose a convenient conversion from advertised horsepower when the official document provides the relevant figure. If the document does not make the applicable value clear, or it conflicts with the service, ask the Motor Vehicle Office or a qualified professional to check the type-approval data.
Until the doubt is resolved, do not treat an automated response as final permission. For example, the website may appear to approve the car while the registered figures exceed your applicable limit. Keep both pieces of information and ask for clarification before setting off. The instructor exception also has specific statutory conditions; it does not cover every person accompanying the driver.

Frequently asked questions
If the Portal accepts the plate, is the result always final?
No. The Portal says the result may be inaccurate for some plug-in hybrids. Compare it with the registration document and ask the competent office if the figures differ.
What if I cannot tell which power figure applies?
Do not choose between peak and system output based on an advert. Check the vehicle’s approved registration data and ask the Motor Vehicle Office or a qualified professional to interpret it.
