Do novice drivers lose twice as many penalty points?

For the first three years, the Highway Code doubles points deducted for a novice driver; the effect depends on the specific offence and its record.

Yes. Article 126-bis doubles the points deducted from a category B licence during the first three years after it is obtained, for offences covered by the points system. This does not mean every traffic issue automatically costs twice as many points: check the points attached to the specific offence, the date of the licence and the notice you received.

The rule doubles points deducted, not the starting balance

The Highway Code distinguishes the points a driver holds from the points removed after an offence. During the first three years after obtaining category B, Article 126-bis doubles the deduction for offences covered by the points system. The actual consequence therefore depends on the points assigned to the specific provision and the facts of the case. There is no single doubled penalty for every issue involving a novice driver.

Read the notice and identify the article cited. Then consult the current deduction table and check whether your licence falls within the first three years. The period starts from the date you obtained the licence, not the first time you drove alone or the date you bought a car. If you hold several categories or converted a foreign licence, ask the office that recorded the licence how the period is calculated for your case.

Check the official record

You can check your current balance through the Automobile Portal’s official services. The traffic notice, identification of the driver and recording of points may be separate steps. If you believe a deduction is wrong, follow the instructions and deadlines shown in the notice; do not wait for the online balance to settle the dispute.

For example, if an offence carries a set deduction, the novice-driver rule may double it within the specified period. The precise calculation still depends on the cited provision and current text. Do not assume extra penalties or licence suspension without checking their legal conditions. If you have received a notice and need help, contact the office named in it about the documents and any available review or appeal process.
