How to check your engine oil level

Follow the handbook procedure: the required parking position, temperature and waiting time vary by model and measurement system.

To check the oil, follow your model’s handbook: some vehicles have a dipstick, others use an electronic reading, and the engine may need to be cold or switched off for a set time. Park on level ground and do not top up with a randomly chosen oil.

Find the specified procedure

Read the maintenance section of the handbook before opening the bonnet. It may require a cold engine, a few minutes after switching off, or operating temperature; the display may also require a sequence with the ignition on. Use the condition specified by the manufacturer, as a reading taken at the wrong time can mislead you.

Park on level ground and apply the parking brake. If the engine is hot, avoid surfaces and parts that can burn you, and keep your hands away from moving components. If the vehicle requires an electronic procedure, do not replace it with an improvised dipstick reading, or vice versa.

Read the dipstick or electronic indicator

If the handbook specifies a dipstick, remove it, wipe it clean, insert it fully and then read it as instructed. The level should be within the marked range, not above it. If there is no dipstick, follow the controls and timings for the electronic system described in the handbook.

If the reading is below minimum, check which oil specification is approved for that engine and how much to add. Do not pour in a whole container at once: add the stated amount in small increments and check again. Too much oil can be as harmful as too little; if unsure, ask a garage.

Know when to get help

If the oil-pressure warning light comes on while driving, stop as soon as it is safe, switch off the engine and consult the handbook or roadside assistance. Do not keep driving to reach a garage: the warning may indicate a problem needing immediate attention.

If the level drops quickly, you see oil beneath the car or hear new noises, do not keep topping up without a diagnosis. Tell the garage the model, mileage, warnings and type of oil already used. Follow the manufacturer’s service intervals; there is no universal distance that applies to every engine.

To revise driving rules, Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, exam-style quizzes and error review; it does not replace the maintenance handbook.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always need to check the oil when the engine is cold?

Not necessarily. The procedure varies: the handbook may require a cold engine or a waiting period after switching off. Follow the instructions for your vehicle.

Which oil should I add if the level is low?

Use only the specification approved for your engine, as stated in the handbook or confirmed by a service centre. Do not choose by viscosity or brand alone.
