Can you park a motorbike on the pavement?

Pavements are for pedestrians. Park your motorbike in a marked bay or authorised space, following signs and local rules.

Do not assume that a scooter’s small size lets you leave it on the pavement. Use an authorised space and keep the pedestrian route clear.

The pavement is not an unrestricted parking bay

The Italian Highway Code prohibits parking on pavements unless signs or applicable rules say otherwise. Motorbikes are not exempt just because they take up less room than a car: a vehicle on a pedestrian route can obstruct wheelchair users, pushchairs, blind people or anyone who needs accessible space.

Look for bays reserved for motorbikes or parking spaces where your vehicle is allowed. If the council has designated an area on the pavement, check that it is marked or signed and do not park outside its limits. Other motorbikes being there does not prove that parking is authorised.

Check the road and local orders

Local rules may designate specific areas and parking arrangements set by the road authority. Check signs, road markings and panels; also consider restrictions near crossings, ramps, stops and entrances. If you cannot find a clearly marked bay, choose a permitted space even if it means walking for a few minutes.

Do not leave the vehicle in front of a doorway, on a ramp or across a tactile route. Do not ride onto the pavement to reach a bay if the manoeuvre is prohibited or unsafe. If signs are covered or unclear, contact the council without blocking the way and wait for reliable guidance.

Park considerately for everyone

Keep the route clear and do not rest the bike against street furniture, trees or ramps. A motorbike can weigh more and take up more room than it seems; its stand must not damage the paving or create an obstruction. In a shared area, leave enough room for vehicles to enter and leave neighbouring bays.

Park your motorbike in a motorbike bay or an area where parking is expressly allowed. Pavements are for pedestrians: do not block them or force people into the road, even if a narrow gap remains. Check the signs and road markings before securing the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

If there is room to get past, can I leave my scooter on the pavement?

The remaining width is not the only issue: parking must be authorised by the applicable rules and signs.

Can I copy where other motorbikes are parked?

No. Other vehicles’ behaviour does not prove that the area is an authorised parking bay.
