Parking
How close can you park to a pedestrian crossing?
Do not park right beside a crossing: the Highway Code prohibits parking near the markings, and signs may require additional clearance.
Keep the crossing visible and accessible. Check the national restriction, nearby junctions and local signs before leaving the vehicle.
Keep the crossing clear
Article 158 of the Italian Highway Code prohibits stopping and parking on or near pedestrian crossings, as well as at other specified points on the carriageway. Do not stop on the markings or leave your car so close that it blocks the view of pedestrians or approaching drivers. For the precise distance, consult the current law and check the signs; do not apply a measurement remembered from another situation without verifying it.
A vehicle parked just before the markings can hide a pedestrian, especially a child or someone with reduced mobility. Leaving the approach clear improves visibility for both sides and makes it easier to reach the opposite pavement. A bay that looks long enough does not override a restriction in the Code or on a sign.
Check nearby junctions and signs too
Before parking, check whether there is a junction, driveway, public transport stop or another restriction near the crossing. Parking may be prohibited there too, and panels can add conditions. Check both sides of the road and the bay markings before leaving your vehicle.
If the markings are faded or the signs seem contradictory, choose a more distant space that is clearly permitted. Report the maintenance issue to the council once parked; do not stop there to take a photo or check your phone.
Choose a space that preserves visibility
A lawful parking space should leave pedestrians and signs visible without narrowing the accessible route. If you cannot find a suitable bay, move on rather than reducing the crossing space. Even a brief stop can put pedestrians and drivers at risk.
Parking on a pedestrian crossing is prohibited. Even without painted lines, the Highway Code prohibits stopping within five metres of the edge of the crossing, unless signs say otherwise. Do not block the view of people crossing: keep the area before the markings clear too and observe any wider restrictions.
