Broken parking meter: what to do before leaving your car

If a parking meter is not working, look for another stated payment method and document the fault; do not assume parking is free.

A faulty machine does not automatically cancel the payment obligation. Check the alternatives offered by the operator and the local authority’s instructions.

Look for another payment method

Before walking away, check whether the nearby meter is actually out of service and look for signs showing a helpline, authorised apps or other ways to pay. Some areas have several machines, and one fault does not prove that they are all unusable. Also check whether the area uses a different system, such as payment by phone or at a named shop.

Use only methods recognised for that area by the local authority or operator. Do not assume that an app available elsewhere is valid in that town or zone. If the app does not show the correct car park, do not pay for a similar area in the hope that the ticket will be matched automatically.

Record the problem

If no alternative works, keep reasonable evidence of the fault, such as a photo taken safely, the time and the meter’s identification number. Contact the operator or the number shown on the machine and ask for instructions. This evidence may help establish what you did, but it does not guarantee that parking will be treated as free or that a penalty notice will be cancelled.

Consider moving the car to a car park where you can pay. If you decide to stay, follow the official guidance you receive and keep the reply. Do not leave the vehicle in a reserved bay or beyond the permitted time because payment is unavailable.

If you receive a penalty notice

Read the notice and check the location, time and alleged rule. Put your evidence in chronological order: failed payment attempt, report to the operator, photos and local-authority guidance. Ask the enforcement authority how to submit any representations and observe the deadlines on the notice; a phone call does not replace a formal procedure.

First try another meter in the same area or the app shown on the signs. If there is no alternative, photograph the faulty machine and note the time; still leave the car only where parking is permitted and follow the local authority’s instructions. An error screen can document your attempt, but does not by itself guarantee exemption from payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does a broken parking meter always make parking free?

No. Look for official alternatives and ask the operator for guidance; practices vary by area.

Is a photo enough to cancel a fine?

A photo can document the circumstances, but does not guarantee the outcome; the competent authority must assess it through the proper procedure.
