Which licence do you need to ride a motorcycle with a sidecar?
A sidecar alone does not determine the licence: check the approved class and limits, since some sidecar motorcycles fit A1.
Under Italian rules, a motorcycle with a sidecar may require A1, A2 or A depending on its classification and technical limits. A1 includes motorcycles with or without a sidecar up to 125 cc, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg; A2 has its own 35 kW, 0.2 kW/kg and original-version limits.
A sidecar does not automatically rule out A1
The MIT page for A1 says the category covers motorcycles with or without a sidecar up to 125 cc, no more than 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio no higher than 0.1 kW/kg. All three limits must be met. It is therefore not correct to assume that every sidecar motorcycle automatically requires unrestricted category A.
For motorcycles outside A1 limits, check whether they fit A2: no more than 35 kW, a power-to-weight ratio up to 0.2 kW/kg, and not derived from a version producing more than twice the permitted maximum. If those criteria are also exceeded, category A may be required. The approved configuration, including the sidecar, matters; an unapproved modification can affect the vehicle’s legal status and documents.
Check the registration and licence
Look up the vehicle class, displacement, power, power-to-weight ratio and approved sidecar configuration in the registration document. Compare those data with your licence and any codes or restrictions shown. A motorcycle being sold with a sidecar, or a similar model fitting A1, does not prove that your exact vehicle does: engine, output and approval may differ.
For example, a sidecar motorcycle with 125 cc, 10 kW and a ratio of 0.09 kW/kg may fit A1 if that configuration is approved; one producing 12 kW exceeds the limit. If the figures are close to a threshold, ask for a technical check based on official records. Theory quizzes can help you remember the categories, but the answer for a particular vehicle depends on its actual approval.
