Does an A1 licence also cover a motor tricycle?

Yes. An A1 licence also covers motor tricycles with power no greater than 15 kW. Check that the vehicle is classified as a tricycle and that its approved power is within the limit; three visible wheels alone do not settle the question.

The power limit and vehicle class

A1 is not limited to motorcycles up to 125 cc: the Italian Transport Ministry also includes motor tricycles with maximum power no greater than 15 kW. For these vehicles, the stated rule is the power limit. A tricycle above 15 kW is outside this entitlement and may require category A, depending on its class and applicable conditions.

The vehicle’s shape does not decide which licence is required. A motorcycle with an added wheel, a quadricycle and an approved tricycle are different classes even if they look similar from a distance. Check the registration document, European vehicle class and approved maximum power. Do not rely on displacement or wheel count if the legal criterion is different.

Examples and a document check

If the document identifies a tricycle and lists an approved power of 14 kW, that figure is within the A1 power limit. At 16 kW, it exceeds the 15 kW limit, so A1 is not enough. In either case, confirm the class: a three-wheel vehicle may be registered in a different category.

Before riding, compare your licence with the class on the vehicle document and check for codes or restrictions on your licence. If the information is unclear, ask the relevant office or seller to confirm it against the type approval. Do not rely on a general answer about “all three-wheelers”: technical features and licence classes vary by model and version. The minimum age for an A1 licence is 16, so the 15 kW limit does not allow someone younger to ride this tricycle.
