Is a category B licence enough to drive a tractor on public roads?

It depends on the machine: classification, dimensions, mass and speed decide whether A1, B or another category applies.

Not always. Italian road law distinguishes agricultural machines by their technical characteristics. A1 can cover certain machines within specified dimensions, mass and speed limits; B applies to other agricultural machines, while exceptional operating machines may require C1. You need the tractor’s classification and registration data.

The machine’s class determines the licence

Article 124 of the Italian Road Code distinguishes agricultural machines by technical characteristics. A1 can be enough for specified machines or combinations within the dimensions and weight limits referenced by article 53 and with a maximum construction speed of 40 km/h. Category B is required for other agricultural machines. Exceptional operating machines require C1. Engine displacement alone does not answer the question.

The tractor’s classification, mass, dimensions and maximum construction speed are part of the assessment. The attached trailer or equipment and whether the machine is being driven on a public road can also affect the requirements. A machine operated by a person on foot has a specific exclusion. It is therefore too broad to say that B covers every tractor, or that every tractor always needs a separate agricultural licence.

Check the registration and use conditions

Read the vehicle certificate or technical document for the machine’s class, dimensions, mass, speed and conditions. Compare those data with the applicable provision, and ask the Motorizzazione or a qualified professional to identify the licence for that exact machine. The registration document also sets conditions for road use and attached equipment.

For example, a tractor exceeding one of the dimensions or mass limits for the A1 case, or designed to travel over 40 km/h, cannot be assessed like a smaller machine in the same family; category B applies to agricultural machines outside that exception. Do not rely on figures for a similar model because versions and configurations may differ. This concerns the licence for public-road use, not workplace safety training or operating equipment on a farm.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive any tractor with category B?

B covers many agricultural machines, but the answer depends on classification and conditions. Check the vehicle documents and article 124.

Is A1 always enough for a small tractor?

No. A1 applies only within specified technical limits, including a maximum construction speed of 40 km/h. Check approved dimensions and mass.
