Are motorway lessons compulsory before the category B practical test?

Decree No. 294/2025 sets eight hours for regular category B, but takes effect with the subsequent director’s decree on the platform.

MIT Decree No. 294/2025 sets eight mandatory hours for a regular, non-special Italian category B licence, including two on motorways or extra-urban roads and one in night-visibility conditions. Its provisions take effect only when the subsequent director’s decree on the certification platform enters into force; earlier learner permits follow transitional rules. Check which regime applies to your authorisation.

Eight hours across four modules

MIT Decree No. 294 of 17 November 2025 sets the practice route for a regular, non-special category B licence. It prescribes eight hours delivered by a qualified instructor: two hours to prepare for safe vehicle use, three on urban roads, two on motorways or extra-urban roads, and one in night-visibility conditions. Lessons are individual and follow the decree’s methods and daily limits.

The six-hour figure found in older webpages or materials belongs to the previous rules. The decree was published in the Official Gazette on 23 December 2025, but Article 6 makes its provisions effective only from the entry into force of the subsequent director’s decree on the certification platform. Earlier learner permits remain under transitional rules; check the implementing act and the regime applicable to your authorisation with MIT or the Motor Vehicle Office. The separate scheme for accompanied driving at age 17 requires at least ten hours; do not combine the routes.

Certification and admission to the test

The driving school records the activities and the Ministry platform issues the required certification. The decree distinguishes a partial certificate after modules A and B from the final certificate after modules C and D; the final certificate enables practice with an accompanying person under Article 122(2). For the practical-test booking, follow your Motor Vehicle Office’s process and confirm that the full requirement has been certified as instructed.

Do not arrange motorway or night lessons on your own to “make up the hours”: the required modules are delivered by a driving school with an authorised instructor. Ask for confirmation of the certificate’s status and keep the course details. If your learner permit has restrictions or you are applying for a special category B licence, different conditions or exemptions may apply; ask the competent office.
