Can you drive an electric van over 3,500 kg with category B?

Under Italian rules, category B may cover a goods vehicle using alternative fuels with a maximum authorised mass above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg in specific cases. It must travel without a trailer, the extra mass must be due exclusively to the propulsion system without increasing payload, and the driver must have held B for at least two years.

A limited allowance with several conditions

MIT describes an allowance to the ordinary 3,500 kg limit for certain goods vehicles using alternative fuels, including electricity, hydrogen and gas. The maximum authorised mass may exceed 3,500 kg but not 4,250 kg only if the vehicle travels without a trailer, the extra mass compared with an equivalent conventional vehicle is due exclusively to the propulsion system, and that extra mass does not increase its load capacity. The driver must also have held category B for at least two years.

This is not a general extension of B to every heavy electric van. A 4,200 kg vehicle with greater payload capacity, extra mass unrelated to propulsion, a trailer, or a driver with less than two years holding B fails one or more conditions. A different category such as C1 may be needed instead.

What to verify in the documents

Check the maximum authorised mass, fuel type, goods-vehicle purpose, any trailer and how long you have held B. You also need technical evidence that the excess mass comes only from the propulsion system and does not increase payload. The vehicle’s approval records or an official annotation may be decisive; do not calculate eligibility just from the number of kilograms.

For example, a goods vehicle authorised at 4,100 kg that travels without a trailer may fit the allowance if its technical documents confirm the propulsion-related mass and unchanged payload, and the driver has held B for at least two years. If any condition is missing, do not assume B is enough. Ask the operator, hire company or Motorizzazione to check the specific vehicle.
