Can you drive a more powerful microcar at age 16?

Yes. From age 16 you can obtain a B1 licence and drive non-light L7e quadricycles that meet the class limits: unladen mass up to 400 kg (550 kg for goods vehicles) and maximum net power up to 15 kW. Check type approval, not the sales description.

What B1 allows from age 16

The Italian Transport Ministry sets 16 as the minimum age for B1. This category covers non-light quadricycles, distinct from the light quadricycles covered by AM. For B1, Article 116 of the Italian Road Code sets an unladen-mass limit of 400 kg, increased to 550 kg for vehicles intended to carry goods, and maximum net engine power of 15 kW. For electric vehicles, the legal definition excludes battery mass.

“More powerful” does not automatically mean suitable for B1. The vehicle must be class L7e and meet all applicable limits, along with its other type-approval characteristics. A mass figure in an advertisement may use a different definition from the legal unladen mass. The decisive figures are those for the approved vehicle, not an estimate or a comparison with an AM microcar.

Check the exact vehicle version

Look at the vehicle document or registration certificate and identify the class, approved mass and power. An L6e microcar remains within the light-quadricycle and AM rules; an L7e may fall within B1 if it meets that category’s limits. A power rating below 15 kW alone does not make a vehicle L7e.

For example, a 16-year-old with B1 may drive an approved L7e quadricycle within its limits and recorded configuration. They may not drive a modified version that exceeds its authorised power simply because the original model was compatible. If a document is unclear, ask the seller or Motor Vehicle Office to confirm the classification before using the vehicle. Your licence must cover the vehicle’s actual class.
