Is an AM licence enough for a heavy quadricycle?

No. AM covers light L6e quadricycles; a non-light L7e quadricycle requires B1 or a compatible higher licence.

No. AM applies to light L6e quadricycles; a non-light L7e quadricycle requires B1. Check the approved class and technical data rather than relying on the word “microcar” or engine size alone.

The distinction is the European vehicle class

An AM licence lets you drive light L6e quadricycles within their limits for mass, speed and motor. A heavier or more powerful vehicle may instead belong to class L7e, the non-light quadricycle category. B1 is the relevant licence for these vehicles and can be obtained from age 16. The Italian Transport Ministry describes B1 vehicles as having an unladen mass no greater than 400 kg, raised to 550 kg for vehicles intended to carry goods, and maximum net power no greater than 15 kW.

“Heavy” is an informal description and cannot decide the licence question. You need to distinguish L6e from L7e in the approval documents. The mass used by the rule has a precise definition, including special treatment of batteries in electric vehicles; it is not the weight shown in an advertisement or the fully laden mass. Power and the other figures must also be the approved values for that vehicle.

A practical document check

Before driving, find the class in the registration certificate or vehicle document and make sure your licence covers it. If it says L7e, AM alone is not enough: you need B1 or a higher category that covers the vehicle. If it says L6e, still compare its data with the AM limits and conditions. Do not rely on the model name, enclosed bodywork or a general statement from a seller.

Consider two quadricycles that look like small cars. One is registered as L6e and meets AM parameters; the other is L7e, with a different approval and performance. The second needs B1 even if people casually call both vehicles microcars. If the documents are unclear or incomplete, ask the owner, seller or Motor Vehicle Office to identify the class before driving.

Frequently asked questions

Can B1 be used to drive an L7e microcar?

Yes, if the non-light quadricycle meets B1 requirements. Check its class and approved data in the vehicle documents.

Do I also need B1 if I hold a category B licence?

Category B is a higher licence that also covers relevant quadricycles. A person who holds only AM needs an appropriate licence such as B1 for an L7e vehicle.
