Which licence do I need to drive a truck with a trailer in Italy?

C or C1 depends on mass and seats; a trailer over 750 kg may require CE or C1E, plus CQC or ADR when applicable.

The Italian truck category depends on maximum authorised mass and passenger capacity: C1 generally covers vehicles over 3,500 kg up to 7,500 kg, while C covers heavier vehicles. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg, C1E or CE may be needed depending on the towing vehicle and combination. Professional transport may also require CQC, and dangerous goods may require the ADR certificate for that load, including tank specialisation where applicable.

Choose the category from the authorised mass

Read the towing vehicle's registration document. C1 generally covers vehicles over 3,500 kg up to 7,500 kg, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver; C covers heavier vehicles in the same ordinary seating class. Do not use kerb weight to choose a category.

With a trailer up to 750 kg, towing may be allowed within the relevant licence category. If its maximum authorised mass exceeds 750 kg, check C1E or CE. For C1E, the combination's maximum authorised mass must not exceed 12,000 kg; CE covers a C vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer under the category rules. Check masses, classification and type approval in the documents.

CQC and ADR are separate qualifications

The licence authorises the vehicle. Goods CQC is generally required for professional work with C1/C vehicles and related combinations in cases set by law. If the load is classified as dangerous under ADR, the required ADR professional certificate may also be necessary; the exact qualification depends on the product, transport method and equipment. For a tank truck, do not assume requirements from its appearance: verify whether the cargo and tank require ADR tank specialisation.

Before starting a job, ask the employer or ADR safety adviser to check the cargo code, documents, licence, CQC and certificates. ADR and CQC do not replace a category licence and are not interchangeable. If the tank carries products that are not classified as dangerous, ADR requirements may differ; the cargo classification, not just the tank shape, controls.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian licence categories and theory; for a tanker truck, check CQC, ADR and cargo requirements separately with your employer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I tow any trailer with category C?

No. Category C allows a trailer within 750 kg; above that, CE may be required, subject to the technical limits.

Are C and CQC enough for a tanker truck?

Not always. If the load is subject to ADR, an ADR certificate and relevant specialisation, such as tanks, may also be required.
