At what age can I get category D to drive a bus in Italy?

D normally requires age 24; specified CQC routes allow professional driving from 21 or 23.

The ordinary minimum age for Italian category D is 24. The law allows earlier professional routes with passenger CQC: from 21 in defined cases, such as after ordinary initial training or for a scheduled service of up to 50 km with accelerated training; the general accelerated D/DE route permits professional driving from 23. D1 is a separate category with an ordinary minimum age of 21.

Ordinary age and CQC routes

The ordinary minimum age listed by MIT for category D is 24. Legislative Decree 286/2005 provides exceptions for drivers with passenger CQC: from 21 for a scheduled service no longer than 50 km after accelerated initial training and its exam, or with ordinary initial training for professional driving; the general accelerated D/DE route has a stated age threshold of 23. The conditions depend on the course and service.

D1 covers buses designed for no more than 16 passengers besides the driver and up to 8 metres long; MIT lists 21 as its ordinary minimum age. Its professional pathway may have separate conditions. Do not confuse the minimum age for the licence category with requirements for a particular job.

Confirm your route with the Ministry

Before enrolling, verify the current route, vehicle category, passenger CQC and sequence of requirements. An age exception does not mean every D licence can be obtained at 21 with any course: the route, course type and successful exam are legal conditions.

Ask the driving school which test and licence code apply to your case, and ask the transport operator what the service requires. For scheduled routes, school transport or passenger hire, do not substitute experience or possession of the category for checking the professional requirements.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review Italian D and D1 theory; confirm age, passenger CQC and the professional route with MIT and a driving school.
