Which licence do you need to drive a minibus?
D1 covers minibuses with up to 16 passengers besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres; larger configurations may need D.
Category D1 covers motor vehicles designed for no more than 16 passengers besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres. If the vehicle exceeds either limit or is designed for more than 16 passengers, category D may be required. Approval documents decide the class, not the label “minibus.”
D1 depends on passenger capacity and length
Italian road law defines D1 vehicles as designed to carry no more than 16 people besides the driver and no longer than 8 metres. That allows up to 17 people in total, including the driver. Both conditions apply: the passenger count alone is not enough if the vehicle is longer than the D1 limit.
Category D applies to vehicles designed for more than eight passengers besides the driver, except vehicles that fall within the specific D1 category. Do not choose a licence from the body shape or sales description. The registration document shows the approved class, number of seats and technical data for that particular vehicle.
Check the service as well as the vehicle
Before driving, check the approved seats, vehicle length and category in the registration document. Also consider the use: professional passenger transport may require a CQC passenger qualification, which is separate from the licence for the vehicle. Whether it is needed depends on the actual service and applicable rules, not simply on the fact that people are on board.
For example, a 7.5-metre minibus approved for 16 passengers plus the driver may fit D1. A vehicle 8.2 metres long exceeds the D1 length limit even if it has fewer seats; one designed for 20 passengers needs the D category checked. For paid work or a company service, verify any CQC and professional requirements separately.
