Digital driving licence in IT-Wallet: where can you use it?

The digital licence added to the Wallet in the IO app may be used in Italy to show that you are authorised to drive during checks by law-enforcement officers. Official sources say this use does not establish international recognition: for travel abroad, carry and use the document required by the destination country.

What the digital licence allows

The Documenti su IO feature lets adults with the updated IO app and a CIE or SPID digital identity add a digital version of their driving licence to the Wallet. The Department for Digital Transformation says it can be shown during in-person checks in Italy to prove that the holder is authorised to drive. It is a digital credential made available through the public service, not a photograph or manually saved screenshot.

The service is voluntary, so you can continue using the physical document. Its permitted uses depend on the Italian rules and contexts described by the administration. The digital licence does not change your category, restrictions, expiry date or the requirement to hold an entitlement for the vehicle you drive.

Check the document required abroad

The official announcement for digital documents specifies use of the IO licence for checks in Italy. Do not extend that statement to foreign countries, border crossings, overseas car rentals or procedures the source does not cover. For travel, check the destination’s requirements and carry the physical licence or any international permit required there.

Before leaving, check that your licence is valid, covers the vehicle and is recognised in the destination. For example, showing the digital credential during a road check in Italy is within the announced use; presenting it to a rental company abroad is not automatically sufficient. IT-Wallet does not replace the physical document everywhere, and its digital version does not extend the expiry date.
