Who can officially translate a foreign driving licence?
MIT lists consular certification and official or sworn translators; an informal translation may not meet the Italian authority's requirements.
MIT recognises defined routes for an official Italian translation of a foreign driving licence: certification by a diplomatic or consular authority, or a translation prepared by an official translator or sworn through the stated procedure. An informal translation is not automatically sufficient. Check the authority's current instructions for your specific licence.
Translation routes identified by MIT
MIT lists translations certified as conforming by the foreign diplomatic or consular representation in Italy, with the required signature legalisation by the Prefecture; certification through an Italian diplomatic or consular representation abroad; and a translation prepared by an official translator or sworn before the competent court clerk, notary or justice of the peace. Follow the route stated for your case rather than assuming any translation office is acceptable.
A full translation may need to reproduce all relevant information, including categories, restrictions, dates and codes. Ask the Motorizzazione office what format and certification it requires before commissioning the work. Article 135 also refers to an international permit as an alternative in the circumstances it covers; that document and a translation are not the same thing.
Keep the original and verify formalities
The translation accompanies the original foreign licence; it does not replace it, renew it or prove that the licence can be exchanged. Check whether a document from a foreign consulate needs legalisation and whether a translator's sworn statement must follow the Italian procedure. Obtain the official translation before driving when Italian rules require it.

Keep a copy of the written instructions and submit the original or certified material only as directed.
