Foreign driving licences
Can I rent a car in Italy with a translated foreign licence?
It depends on the issuing country, validity and residence; some non-EU licences need an official translation or an international permit.
A translation is not always enough. In Italy, a valid non-EU/EEA licence must cover the vehicle and, where required, be accompanied by an international permit or an official Italian translation; ordinary driving is also subject to the one-year residence limit. A rental company may impose additional contract conditions.
Legal validity of a foreign licence in Italy
Article 135 of the Italian Road Code governs driving in Italy with a licence issued outside the European Union or European Economic Area. The licence must be valid and cover the vehicle category. Depending on the applicable agreements, it may also need an international permit issued by the licensing country or an official Italian translation.
For non-EU/EEA licence holders who acquire residence in Italy, the general rule allows driving with the foreign licence for up to one year under the stated conditions. After that, conversion is required if an agreement exists; otherwise, an Italian licence must be obtained through the examination process. EU/EEA licences follow different rules and are recognised under European provisions.
Car rental is a separate agreement
Even if a licence is valid for driving, a rental company may set additional contract requirements for age, length of driving experience, document format or supporting papers. An official translation meets only the language requirement where the law calls for it; it does not require a private company to accept a booking that fails its contract terms.
Before paying, ask the rental company to confirm in writing which categories and documents it accepts. For example, a visitor with a valid non-EU licence and official translation may meet the legal driving-document requirement, while the company may still impose a minimum age or years of experience. Check whether a country-specific agreement applies and do not use an unofficial translation where an official one is required.

Frequently asked questions
Does an official translation make every foreign licence valid?
No. The licence must be valid, cover the vehicle and meet the applicable recognition and residence rules.
If I may legally drive, must the rental company give me a car?
Not necessarily. The contract may add conditions on age, experience and required documents.
