Foreign driving licences
Foreign tourist in Italy: which documents are needed to drive?
Carry a valid licence; drivers with a non-EU/EEA licence also need an international permit or official Italian translation.
A tourist driving in Italy needs a valid licence covering the vehicle. If the licence was issued outside the EU or EEA, Italian law requires an international driving permit or an official Italian translation alongside it. Carry the original documents and the vehicle papers; residence in Italy triggers a separate time limit.
Match the licence document to its issuing area
A valid EU/EEA licence is generally recognised in Italy for its listed categories. A visitor with a licence issued outside the EU/EEA must follow Article 135 of the Italian Highway Code: the licence must be valid and accompanied by an international permit or an official translation into Italian. The permit or translation does not replace the original licence.
Check the licence's expiry date, categories, restrictions and the name shown on the vehicle rental agreement. If the driver is not the vehicle owner, carry authorisation where required. Carry the vehicle registration and insurance evidence as well. A tourist stay and residence in Italy are distinct: the one-year rule applies after acquiring Italian residence, not as a blanket limit for every visitor.
Carry vehicle documents and follow Italian road rules
ACI's onboard-document guidance explains documents to keep in the vehicle and traffic obligations such as seat-belt use. Requirements can differ for a rental, borrowed car or foreign-registered vehicle, so check the specific papers and insurance. For a non-EU/EEA licence, do not rely on an informal translation or assume that a digital image is enough.
If you plan to become resident, review MIT's current conversion guidance before the one-year period ends; the issuing country and reciprocal agreement determine whether exchange is available.
